Whitney font free download guide: commercial Hoefler&Co. font, legal licensing, prices and 3 free alternatives

There is no official Whitney font free download. Whitney is a commercial typeface designed by Tobias Frere-Jones and sold by Hoefler&Co., which has been part of Monotype since 2021. Neither Hoefler&Co. nor MyFonts offers a free, demo or personal-use version. As of October 2026 a desktop licence for the 12 core styles costs $199 for one computer on Hoefler&Co.’s own site. Sites offering Whitney for free are sharing unlicensed copies.

No. The two places that sell Whitney legally are Hoefler&Co.’s Whitney page on typography.com and MyFonts’ Whitney family page. MyFonts started listing Hoefler&Co. fonts on September 28, 2021, the same month Monotype acquired Hoefler&Co. and said the fonts would stay on sale at typography.com. Neither has a trial file, though both let you preview the letters.

Hoefler&Co.’s licensing FAQ says every computer where the font is installed or stored needs a licence. A “free” copy from a download site gives you no rights, even for personal use.

Design and character: a museum typeface

On MyFonts’ family page, Hoefler&Co. explains the brief: museum catalogs need type narrow enough for crowded layouts, while signage needs type open enough to read at a distance and sturdy enough to be “cast in bronze, etched in glass, cut in vinyl, and rendered in pixels”.

The foundry calls it a “humanist” sans “with letterforms shaped by kinesthesia rather than pure geometry”: the shapes follow the movement of a hand, not a compass. It places Whitney between American gothics like News Gothic (1908), long used in editorial work, and European humanists like Frutiger (1975), common in signage. Its “compact forms and broad x-height use space efficiently, and its ample counters and open shapes make it clear under any circumstances.”

A nine-degree angle recurs through the design, echoing Marcel Breuer’s 1966 building for the Whitney Museum at 945 Madison Avenue.

Whitney font family: what’s in it

Hoefler&Co.’s how-to-use guide says the core family has six weights from Light to Black, each with a roman, an italic and, in the larger editions, small caps. The weights are spaced evenly, and the foundry’s rule of thumb is that the style three steps heavier works as the bold for any weight.

Whitney Book font

Book is the weight Hoefler&Co. shows by default in its character viewer and in its text examples. It’s the usual choice for paragraphs, captions and interface text.

Whitney Medium font and Whitney Bold font

Medium suits buttons, labels and subheads. Bold sits three steps above Book, so by the foundry’s rule it’s the natural emphasis for Book text.

Whitney Condensed font and Whitney Narrow

Both narrower widths have the same six weights with italics. Hoefler&Co. describes Whitney Narrow as “specifically designed for all kinds of limited environments: narrow text columns, dense headlines, and web and mobile applications”. Whitney Condensed is a separate family, useful for signs, tables and headlines in tight spaces.

Whitney Index

Whitney Index is a set of 16 fonts with characters inside circles and squares, in three weights and in positive and negative versions. Four Condensed Index fonts can wrap two-digit numbers in one shape through an OpenType feature. On Fonts In Use, Matthew Butterick’s book Typography for Lawyers used Whitney Index White Round for its numbering.

Hoefler&Co. also sells Whitney Office (four styles tuned for Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and Whitney ScreenSmart, a hinted version for small text on screen.

Language support and OpenType features

Whitney covers Hoefler&Co.’s Expanded Latin, Cyrillic and Greek character sets, with local letter shapes for Bulgarian, Serbian and Macedonian Cyrillic. The foundry gives two counts: its design notes say “more than 200 languages”, its how-to-use page says 564.

Across its editions Whitney has six kinds of numbers: old-style, lining, tabular (equal widths, so columns line up), fractions, superscripts and subscripts, and circled indices. Stylistic sets swap individual letters, such as a single-storey “g”, an open “4”, a flat-topped “3” and curly commas.

InDesign, Illustrator, Affinity and Figma can switch these on from their OpenType menus. Canva, Cricut Design Space and most video apps can’t reach stylistic sets, so in those apps you only get the default letters.

Discord Whitney font: the switch to gg sans

An archived Discord stylesheet from December 2021 sets Whitney as Discord’s primary font, with Ginto for display headings. FontsArena dates Whitney’s run at Discord from 2015 to 2022.

On November 29, 2022, Discord announced that from December 1, 2022 its apps, website and blog would move to “our new, custom font, gg sans”, saying the change gives it “the flexibility to customize our font going forward”. Discord’s FAQ adds that gg sans “is not currently an open-source font”, so you can’t use it either.

Discord’s licence never extended to its users. To recreate the old Discord look, you need your own Whitney licence or a free alternative.

Whitney font pairings and best uses

Whitney fits wayfinding, reports, data tables, websites and app interfaces. Fonts In Use records it on Stripe.com in 2014, “typeset completely in Whitney”, on the 37signals logos around 2011, and on Mitt Romney’s 2012 campaign alongside Mercury.

  • Foundry pairings: Hoefler&Co. suggests Mercury, Chronicle, Archer and Gotham as partners, all from its own catalogue.
  • Free serif partners: Source Serif 4 or Merriweather for body text under Whitney headings.

Whitney font download prices and licences

Desktop prices for one computer or user, in US dollars, checked October 2026:

  • typography.com: Whitney Basic $199 (12 styles), Whitney Advanced $299 (adds small caps), Whitney Pro $499 (adds tabular figures, fractions, extended symbols and Whitney Index), Whitney Index $99, Whitney Narrow $199, Whitney Condensed $199, Whitney Office $199. Two computers raise Basic to $248, five to $395.
  • MyFonts: Whitney Index pack $104 (16 fonts), Whitney Narrow pack $209 (12), Whitney Condensed pack $209 (12), and a 12-style standard-width pack labelled “Complete Family Pack” at $524. The header’s “Complete family of 16 fonts: $104” actually describes the Index pack.

MyFonts doesn’t say whether its $524 pack matches Hoefler&Co.’s Basic, Advanced or Pro edition, so compare glyph lists before paying. MyFonts’ Desktop licence covers print, logos, videos, social posts and PDFs; websites, apps, e-books and digital ads need separate licences.

There is no separate personal-use tier. A paid licence covers personal and commercial work within its terms. For logos, Hoefler&Co.’s FAQ suggests converting the lettering to outlines; a client who wants to type in Whitney needs their own licence. This is general information, not legal advice.

Free fonts similar to Whitney

Free fonts similar to Whitney: Source Sans 3, Fira Sans and PT Sans compared
Three free fonts similar to Whitney, rendered from the Google Fonts files. None of them is Whitney itself.

None of these is Whitney, but all three are humanist sans serifs, free for commercial use under the SIL Open Font License.

  • Source Sans 3: Paul D. Hunt’s design for Adobe, intended “to work well in user interfaces”. It has weights from ExtraLight to Black with italics and covers Latin, Greek and Cyrillic, but it has only one width and no circled-number companion like Whitney Index.
  • Fira Sans: made by Carrois for Mozilla’s Firefox OS, with Thin to Black weights in three widths (Fira Sans, Condensed and Extra Condensed). It’s the closest free match for Whitney’s multi-width system.
  • PT Sans: ParaType’s 2009 family for the “Public Types of Russian Federation” project, with humanist details and strong Cyrillic support. It has only Regular and Bold with italics, plus Narrow and Caption styles, so the weight range is far smaller than Whitney’s.

Among paid fonts we cover, Neue Frutiger Condensed is the condensed Linotype version of the humanist Frutiger design Whitney is often compared with, FF Meta Pro is Erik Spiekermann’s humanist sans from FontFont, and Avenir Next is the geometric Linotype family that ships with macOS.

For headlines next to Whitney text, Hoefler&Co.’s condensed gothic Knockout is a natural partner from the same foundry.

For Hoefler&Co.’s geometric sans built from New York’s vernacular signage, see our guide to Gotham.

Whitney is often compared with Frutiger, Adrian Frutiger’s humanist sans built for signs at Charles de Gaulle Airport.
