There is no official Burgues Script font free download. Burgues Script is a commercial font by Alejandro Paul, published by the Argentine foundry Sudtipos, and it has no free, personal-use or trial version on the foundry’s site or on MyFonts. Burgues Script font free download: is there a legal free version?
No. The Burgues Script page on Sudtipos sells one style from $99.00, with Desktop, Webfont, Digital Ads, Epub, MobileApp, WebApp and Broadcasting licences. MyFonts’ Burgues Script family page lists two styles, each from $99.00 USD. Neither offers a demo or trial.
The Sudtipos end user licence agreement says you “cannot make any Sudtipos fonts available for download on the internet”. A “free” copy gives you no licence for a logo, print job or product.

Design and character: an ode to Louis Madarasz
Alejandro Paul calls Burgues Script “an ode to the late 19th century American calligrapher Louis Madarasz”. The same page quotes people who called Madarasz “the most skillful penman the world has ever known”. His ornate, high-contrast hand grew out of the Spencerian penmanship that, as Slanted’s 2007 release note puts it, every refined 19th-century American learned, and Slanted calls his lettering “the pinnacle of this style”.
Paul’s two sources were Zaner-Bloser’s The Secret of the Skill of Madarasz (1911, according to Luc Devroye) and C. W. Jones’s Lessons in Advanced Engraver’s Script Penmanship by L. Madarasz. He changed many letters so they would connect smoothly in digital form, then added ligatures, swashes and flourished letters for the starts and ends of words. “Burgues” is Spanish for “bourgeois”.
On Sudtipos’ specimen, the lowercase leans hard to the right with thick, shaded downstrokes and hairline joins. Capitals throw huge oval loops; in the word “Young” the Y’s tail circles around the whole word. In the “quick brown fox” sample, flourishes from one line wrap around the words on the next.
Reviewing it for Typographica, Christian Palino wrote that its “sweeping, high contrast swashes carry the tension of the pen”. Typographica’s review also tells how Matthew Carter showed Paul a copy of the New York Times Magazine at TypeCon2007, where art director Nancy Harris Rouemy had been using Burgues Script in the Style section for months.
Burgues Script fonts: what’s in the family
There are no weights to choose between, and the stores describe the family differently:
- Sudtipos: one style, “Burgues Script”, from $99.00, in OpenType, TrueType and web font formats.
- MyFonts: two styles, “Burgues Script” and “Burgues Script Std Regular”, each from $99.00 USD. MyFonts doesn’t say how the Std file differs, so ask before buying if you need a particular character set.
- Character count: Slanted’s 2007 note says “more than 500 characters”, including swashes, titling forms and alternates. Neither store page currently shows a glyph count.
Burgues Script is not on Adobe Fonts or Google Fonts. Adobe Fonts does carry Compendium, a different Alejandro Paul script he calls a “prequel to Burgues”, based on Platt Rogers Spencer’s earlier style.
Burgues Script alphabet, languages and OpenType features
To see the whole Burgues Script alphabet, use the “View all glyphs” panel on the Sudtipos page. For languages, Sudtipos lists Basic Latin, Latin CE (Central European), Latin Extended, Latin Extended-A and Latin Extended-B. There is no Cyrillic or Greek listed.
The OpenType features listed by Sudtipos, in plain words:
- Standard and discretionary ligatures: joined letter pairs, some on by default and some you switch on for extra flourish.
- Swashes: letters with long decorative strokes, mostly for capitals and word endings.
- Initial and final forms (Init, Fina): flourished versions of letters for the start or end of a word.
- Stylistic alternates and Stylistic Sets 01–08: different designs of the same letters you can swap in.
- Ornaments, fractions and superscript: decorative pieces and small figures.
Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Affinity and Figma can reach these from their glyphs or OpenType panels. Canva and Cricut Design Space can’t turn on OpenType features, so there you get only the default letters, without the flourishes seen on the specimens.
Burgues Script font generator: what those sites really are
People use “Burgues Script generator” sites to see a name or tattoo phrase in the font. “Font generator” sites usually do one of two things. Most swap your letters for Unicode lookalike characters, such as the “mathematical script” alphabet any phone can display; those are not Burgues Script and look nothing like it. Others draw a picture of your text with a font file they host, which for a commercial font usually means an unlicensed copy. Neither gives you the font or the right to use the result.
The legal test is free. The Sudtipos page has a type tester at the top: type your words, change size and line spacing, and tick swashes, Init, Fina or the stylistic sets to watch the letters change. MyFonts’ family page has a type tester too. A screenshot is fine for showing a tattoo artist or client the idea; the final artwork needs a licensed copy.
Burgues Script font pairings and best uses
Burgues Script works best for a word or two at large sizes: invitations, monograms, certificates, drinks labels, book covers and editorial headlines. The “Font in use” gallery on Sudtipos shows a Campari Negroni label and a cover for “The House of Annie Lennox”, where the script sits under widely spaced capitals. Small sizes lose the hairlines, so keep it out of body text.
- With a Didone serif: Bodoni Moda shares the sharp thick-thin contrast and fits the engraved, 19th-century mood.
- With an old-style serif: Cormorant Garamond is lighter and softer for invitation details and dates.
- With a sans: Montserrat in spaced capitals gives a clean line under the script, as on the Annie Lennox cover.
Can you use Burgues Script for commercial work?
Only with a paid licence. There is no free personal-use tier, so even a home project needs one. The Desktop licence covers print, logos and products. The Sudtipos EULA allows two computers used with two physical output devices, and names vinyl cutters and silkscreen presses as output devices, which matters for Cricut and shirt makers. Images and navigation graphics on a website are allowed too.
Live web fonts, apps, ebooks and broadcast titles each need their own licence. You can’t share, resell or sell modified versions of the files. When you buy through a distributor such as MyFonts, the EULA says the distributor’s terms also apply, so read the licence at checkout. This is general information, not legal advice.

Free fonts similar to Burgues Script

No free font matches Burgues Script’s flourishes, but these Google Fonts get close for invitations and titles. All three are under the SIL Open Font License, which allows commercial use.
- Pinyon Script: a round hand script with high contrast and a steep slant, the closest match to Burgues’ engraved lowercase. Its capitals are much plainer, with small loops instead of page-wide swashes.
- Monsieur La Doulaise: also from Alejandro Paul and Sudtipos, part of their revival of the Charles Bluemlein scripts from the hand-lettering era of the 1930s and 1940s. It has the most flourished capitals of the three, but the free version has no alternates or OpenType features.
- Great Vibes: a smoother, more casual script with over 2,000 glyphs, alternates and connecting ligatures. It covers Cyrillic too, but its capitals are rounder and less formal than Burgues’.
Among paid fonts we cover, Mozart Script II is a Spencerian copperplate script for DIY wedding work, Jinglers is a monoline script for vintage signage and logos, and Naterium is a retro-modern script for logos, quotes and wedding sets.
