About Us
Tantype is an independent review site for typefaces. We write in depth about individual fonts — what each one does well, where it struggles, and what it is genuinely good for — so that you can choose with confidence instead of guessing from a thumbnail.
We do not host or sell fonts. Every review points you to the designer or marketplace that does.
What a Tantype review covers
Every review follows the same structure, so you can compare two typefaces without re-reading an essay:
- Design style — the letterforms, the contrast, the rhythm, and the mood they create
- Character set and features — weights, alternates, glyph coverage and language support
- Use cases — the work the font is actually suited to, and the work it isn’t
- Pairing suggestions — what to set alongside it, and why that combination works
- Licensing and availability — what you get and where to get it
- Verdict — a plain summary and a score
The Tantype Score
Each review carries a score out of five, built from four things we judge separately:
- Design — is it well drawn, and does it have a point of view?
- Legibility — does it hold together at the sizes you will really use it at?
- Versatility — how many jobs can it do before it starts to strain?
- Value — is what you get worth what it costs?
A high score means we would use the font ourselves. A lower one is not an insult to the designer — it usually means the typeface is excellent at one narrow thing and awkward everywhere else, which is worth knowing before you commit a brand to it.
How we stay independent
Tantype is free to read, and it is funded two ways: advertising, and affiliate commissions when a reader downloads a font through one of our links.
Neither of those buys a good review. We choose which fonts to cover, we write what we think, and a commission is the same whether we score a typeface 4.9 or 3.5. Affiliate links are disclosed on every review that carries one, and marked as sponsored in the page code. Our privacy policy sets out exactly how this works.
If we get something wrong — a licence detail, a glyph count, a designer credit — we want to know, and we correct it. Corrections take priority over new posts.

More than 550 typefaces are reviewed so far. The quickest way in is by category:
- Serif — bookish, editorial, and built for reading
- Script — calligraphy, brush and signature faces
- Sans Serif — clean, modern and screen-friendly
- Handwritten — warm, personal and informal
Who writes Tantype
Tantype is written and edited in-house. Reviews are signed, and each one links to the author’s profile so you can see everything they have covered. We are typography enthusiasts and designers, not a content farm — the fonts we review are ones we would consider using.
