FF Meta Pro Book free download: what’s available officially

The official FF Meta listing on MyFonts sells individual styles and family packs. It offers no demo file, and we found no free personal-use release from FontFont or Monotype. Any free copy of FF Meta Pro Book on a download site is unlicensed.

What a licence gets you on MyFonts:

  • The Book weight on its own, or its italic, at $113.99 each for a single-user desktop licence.
  • Or the whole family, 28 styles from Hairline to Black in normal and condensed widths, for $328.99.
  • Separate licence types for company-wide desktop use, websites, apps, electronic documents and digital ads.

If you want something free and closely related, look at Fira Sans. According to Wikipedia’s FF Meta article, Fira Sans (2013) is a free derivative of FF Meta made for Mozilla’s Firefox OS, and Mozilla itself is listed among FF Meta’s users. It is not FF Meta, but it is the nearest free relative.

Design and character

The FF Meta Pro Book font is part of FF Meta, a humanist sans serif, meaning its letters keep some of the structure of handwriting instead of the even, mechanical shapes of Helvetica. Wikipedia records that Spiekermann meant it as the “complete antithesis of Helvetica”, although it was later “dubiously praised”, in Spiekermann’s words, as the Helvetica of the 1990s. It began in 1985 as a commission for the German post office, the Deutsche Bundespost, which never used it, and was released through FontFont in 1991.

The specimen above was rendered from the licensed font files. In it you can see what makes the Book weight readable: slightly narrow, compact letters, open curves on c, e and s, and stroke endings cut at an angle rather than flat. The figures in the default setting are old-style, with 3, 4, 5, 7 and 9 dropping below the baseline and 6 and 8 rising above the lowercase, so numbers blend into a paragraph instead of standing out like capitals.

Book is one step up from Normal in the family. In our styles image the two sit side by side, and Book is visibly a little darker, which makes it a good choice for text on screens, light paper or small sizes where Normal can look thin. The italics are true italics with narrower, more flowing letters, not just slanted romans.

What’s in the FF Meta Pro Book package

  • Licensed files we rendered: ten styles of FF Meta Pro: Normal, Book, Medium, Bold and Black, each with an italic, in OTF format.
  • Full family on MyFonts: 28 styles, adding Hairline, Thin, Light and a condensed width.
  • Glyphs: 902 in the files, including Greek and Cyrillic, several figure styles, small caps and ornaments.
  • Version: 7.460. Not a variable font in these files.
  • Designer: Erik Spiekermann, per the font files. Wikipedia credits contributions by others over the years, including Cyrillic versions by Tagir Safayev and Olga Chayeva.

Language support and OpenType features

The Pro character set covers Basic Latin, Western European, Cyrillic and Greek, so one font handles English, the main European languages, Russian, Ukrainian and Greek.

FF Meta Pro Book has a deep set of OpenType features. In plain terms:

  • Kerning: automatic spacing fixes for letter pairs.
  • Standard and discretionary ligatures: joined letter pairs such as fi; standard ones are on by default, discretionary ones you switch on.
  • Old-style, lining and tabular figures: numbers that blend with lowercase text, numbers at capital height, and numbers of equal width that line up in tables.
  • Small caps: real small capitals for acronyms and headings.
  • Fractions: turns 1/2 into a proper fraction.
  • Stylistic alternates and one stylistic set: alternate letter shapes you can switch on individually or as a group.
  • Ornaments: decorative symbols built into the font.

InDesign, Illustrator, Affinity Publisher and modern browsers (through CSS font-feature-settings) give full access. Word and Pages handle some features. FF Meta has no Private Use Area characters, so in Canva or Cricut Design Space you will get the default letters and old-style figures but not the alternates, small caps or other figure styles.

Best uses and font pairings

Book is a text weight. It suits long reading: reports, magazines, books, signage systems, websites and app interfaces. Wikipedia lists users including Mozilla, Imperial College London and The Weather Channel.

FF Meta Serif, the serif companion released in 2007, is the natural partner. A sturdy book serif such as Source Serif or Merriweather also works for headlines.

Licensing: personal vs commercial use

MyFonts sells FF Meta under several licence types: Desktop and Company Desktop for installing on computers, Webfonts for websites, App for software, Electronic Doc for e-books and PDFs, and Digital Ad for ads. The desktop prices above are for one user. There is no free personal-use licence, so personal and commercial use both need a paid licence. Read the Monotype licence terms shown at checkout; this is a summary, not legal advice.

How to install FF Meta Pro Book

After you download FF Meta Pro Book from your MyFonts account:

Windows: unzip the files, right-click the OTF files and choose Install for all users.

Mac: double-click each OTF file and click Install Font in Font Book. Install the italics too, so apps can switch to the real italic instead of a slanted fake.

If you were after an FF Meta Pro Book free download to avoid the cost, the three free Google Fonts suggested here are an option, but they are all geometric sans serifs, built from circles and straight lines. That is the opposite of FF Meta’s humanist construction, so each one looks rounder and wider. Fira Sans, mentioned above, is the closer free match.

  • Outfit is a clean geometric sans with a variable weight range. It is wider and rounder than Meta, with a modern, brand-like feel, and reads less warmly in long text.
  • Josefin Sans is elegant and vintage, with a low x-height and long ascenders. It suits headings far better than paragraphs.
  • Poppins is a widely used geometric sans with a large x-height and near-circular bowls. It is sturdy and clear, but it lacks Meta’s narrow, efficient fit, so the same text takes more space.

Another humanist sans built for crowded layouts and signage is Whitney, originally drawn for the Whitney Museum and used by Discord until 2022.
