Gotham Font Free Download
There is no official Gotham font free download. Gotham is a commercial typeface by Hoefler&Co., the New York foundry that has been part of Monotype since 2021, and neither Hoefler&Co. nor MyFonts offers a free, demo or personal-use version. As of October 2026 the eight core styles cost $199 for one computer on Hoefler&Co.’s site or $200 on MyFonts. If you already pay for Creative Cloud, Gotham is included in the Adobe Fonts library at no extra cost. Sites offering free Gotham files are sharing unlicensed copies.
Gotham font free download: is there a legal free version?
No. You can buy Gotham legally from Hoefler&Co.’s Gotham page on typography.com and from MyFonts’ Gotham family page, run by Monotype, which bought Hoefler&Co. in 2021. Neither has a trial file.
The one legal way to use Gotham without buying a licence is Adobe Fonts. Its Gotham page lists 64 fonts, all marked as part of the full library rather than the free tier. Adobe’s April 2025 announcement says the Monotype fonts it added, Gotham among them, are available to all paid Creative Cloud subscribers. A free Adobe account doesn’t cover it.

Design and character: what letters look like
Fonts In Use says Gotham was designed in 2000 following a commission from Arem Duplessis and Paul Martinez at GQ, and that it was inspired by “the sans-serif caps on the entrance to the Port Authority Bus Terminal and similar signs” in New York. GQ used it first, and the Hoefler Type Foundry put it on general sale in August 2002.
Hoefler&Co.’s design notes describe that source material as “an engineer’s idea of ‘basic lettering'”: cast bronze numbers on office doorways, cornerstone inscriptions, neon shop signs and names painted on delivery trucks. The foundry says this style “went unrevived until 2000” and that Gotham added what the signs never had, including a lowercase, italics and a full range of weights and widths.
The how-to-use guide calls it “an unmannered sans serif with a large lowercase, clear gestures, and generous fit”. Short ascenders and descenders make it sit “large on the body”, so it looks bigger than other fonts at the same point size and can take tight line spacing.
Credits vary. Hoefler&Co. names Hoefler and Frere-Jones as co-designers, while Fonts In Use and Adobe Fonts credit Frere-Jones as the designer, with contributions from Hoefler and Ragan.
What’s in the Gotham font family
On typography.com, Gotham has four widths: Regular, Narrow, Extra Narrow and Condensed. Each has eight weights from Thin to Ultra with italics, and Condensed adds an Extra Black. Each width is split into a “1” package (Light to Bold) and a “2” package (Thin, Extra Light, Black and Ultra), for 66 styles in total.
In May 2026, for the typeface’s 25th anniversary, Monotype launched Gotham Variable, with a new Compact width and in-between weights. MyFonts now lists 120 static fonts: five widths, each with 12 weights (Thin, Extra Light, Light, Book, News, Medium, Semibold, Bold, Extra Bold, Black, Extra Black, Ultra) and italics. Typography.com still shows the older 66-style family, so check which version a store is selling.
Gotham Book, Gotham Bold and Gotham Black
Book is the regular text weight. Hoefler&Co.’s rule is that the style two steps heavier works as its bold, so Bold pairs with Book and Black with Medium. Black and Ultra are the heavy display weights, sold in the Gotham 2 package on typography.com.
Gotham Rounded
Gotham Rounded swaps sharp corners for soft ones, based on the lettering on stencils, blueprints and precision instruments. It has eight styles (Light, Book, Medium and Bold, with italics). Hoefler&Co. dates it to 2004, with its first appearance in Print magazine, while Wikipedia says 2007. It wasn’t part of the 2026 expansion and isn’t on Adobe Fonts.
Gotham Office and ScreenSmart
Gotham Office is a four-style version for Word, PowerPoint and Excel, and Gotham ScreenSmart is a hinted web version for small screen text.
Language support and OpenType features
Gotham covers Hoefler&Co.’s Expanded Latin, Cyrillic and Greek character sets, which the foundry says support 564 languages. It also has local letter shapes for Bulgarian, Serbian and Macedonian Cyrillic. MyFonts says the 2026 update added Vietnamese and improved the Cyrillic, but not in Gotham Office, Gotham Rounded or the ScreenSmart fonts.
The default numbers are lining figures. Tabular figures (all the same width, so columns line up), fractions, superscripts and subscripts are in the full packages. Seven stylistic sets swap individual characters:
- a tailed “Q” (set 01)
- a round-topped “3” (set 02)
- a single-storey “a” (set 03)
- a joined accent on “Å” (set 04)
- a larger “®” (set 05)
- a seriffed “1” in fractions (set 06)
- a joined Greek Xi (set 07)
InDesign, Illustrator, Affinity and Figma can switch these on in their OpenType menus. Canva, Cricut Design Space and most video apps can’t reach stylistic sets, so you only get the default letters there.
Where Gotham has been used
- Freedom Tower cornerstone (2004): Eye magazine reported that Gotham was chosen for the inscription on the 20-ton granite cornerstone of the Freedom Tower, now One World Trade Center.
- Obama 2008: Hoefler&Co.’s colophon says Gotham “gained international attention in 2007 when it was adopted by the presidential campaign of Barack Obama”. Fonts In Use lists it on Shepard Fairey’s campaign posters.
- Netflix: It’s Nice That reported in 2018 that Netflix’s move from Gotham to its own Netflix Sans “was driven by escalating costs”.
- Discovery Family: its 2014 logo combines Gotham with another typeface.

- Foundry pairings: Hoefler&Co. suggests Mercury, Quarto, Idlewild, Tungsten, Didot, Operator, Surveyor, Forza, Landmark and Numbers.
- Free serif partners: Source Serif 4 for body text, or Playfair Display for an editorial look.

Free fonts similar to Gotham

Google Fonts doesn’t have Gotham, but these three are close, and all are free for commercial use under the SIL Open Font License.
- Montserrat: Julieta Ulanovsky based it on old posters and signs in the Montserrat neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, which is a similar idea to Gotham’s New York signs. It has Thin to Black with italics and covers Cyrillic and Vietnamese. It is wider than Gotham, and its Regular is quite light, so you may need to go one weight heavier.
- Figtree: Erik Kennedy’s “clean yet friendly geometric sans” for web and mobile apps. It is more compact than Montserrat, a good stand-in for Gotham Book in interfaces. It runs from Light to Black with italics, Latin only.
- Nunito: a rounded-terminal sans by Vernon Adams, extended by Jacques Le Bailly. It is the closest free match for Gotham Rounded. Its sister family, Nunito Sans, has square ends.
Among paid fonts we cover, Whitney (a humanist text sans) and Knockout (a condensed headline sans) are two more Hoefler&Co. families, and Gilroy is a geometric sans with two officially free weights.
