Madina Script Font Free Download

Madina Script font free download guide: commercial brush script by Sam Parrett, brush and Clean styles, and 3 free alternatives

If you are looking for a Madina Script font free download, the honest answer is that there isn’t an official one. Madina Script is a commercial brush script by Sam Parrett of Set Sail Studios, and we found no free, demo or personal-use version from the designer anywhere. A licence is cheap, though: $18 for a desktop licence on Creative Market as of October 2026. The free “Madina” on DaFont is a different font by another designer.

Madina Script font free download: what’s free and what isn’t

Sam Parrett sells Madina Script on Creative Market, on the Set Sail Studios shop and on MyFonts. None of those pages offers a trial download. Set Sail gives away other fonts in the free section of its shop and on its DaFont profile, but Madina Script is not among them.

Search DaFont for “madina” and the top result is Madina by Ghuroba Studio, a calligraphy script with over 2.2 million downloads. It is a different font, and its own note says the file is a demo “for PERSONAL USE ONLY”. It won’t give you Sam Parrett’s letters, alternates or ornaments.

Madina Script design and character

The designer describes it as “a fabulously fun yet elegant script font” with “extra bouncy curves & loops”. In the specimens on Set Sail’s product page, the lowercase has a small x-height and tall, looped ascenders on b, d, h, k and l, so words look light and airy even though the strokes are fairly heavy. Letters sit at slightly different heights, which gives a line its bounce.

The original Madina Script shows the marks of a dry brush: on the official alphabet sheet, the thicker strokes break up into streaks at their edges. Capitals use the same quick brush hand, not formal copperplate, and many words end in a long, thin exit stroke.

The name comes from music. In a comment on We and the Color’s 2016 feature, Parrett says it is named after the band Madina Lake; his first choice, Adalia (one of their songs), was already taken. His About page says he worked mainly in the music industry before launching his first typeface in 2014. Typewolf records an early use: the site Oliving the Life, its Site of the Day on July 13, 2016.

What’s in the Madina Script font download

The “(New Update)” in the listing title refers to Madina Clean, a smooth-edged version of the whole set. Set Sail’s preview images for it were uploaded in February 2017, so the Clean styles appear to date from then. The download contains:

  • Madina Script: upper and lowercase, numerals and “a large range of punctuation”, with the rough brush texture
  • Madina Script Alt: a second font with a completely different set of lowercase letters, so repeated letters don’t look identical
  • Madina Script Ornaments: 30 hand-drawn extras, including end-swashes for first and last letters, olive branches and flourishes. The designer notes that some swashes need nudging into place.
  • Madina Clean, Clean Alt and Clean Ornaments: the same three fonts “with the rough brush texture removed and replaced with a completely smooth edge”

The official update graphic recommends the Clean version for “laser & vinyl cutting”. MyFonts packages the family differently: 4 fonts (Madina Script, Madina Ornaments, Madina Clean and Madina Clean Ornaments) and no separate Alt fonts. It still mentions “a complete set of lowercase alternates”, but doesn’t show how they are delivered.

Language support and OpenType features

Set Sail lists support for English, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Polish, Indonesian, Filipino and Malay. Creative Market’s list adds Hungarian, so test ő and ű before relying on it. No Cyrillic or Greek is listed.

Two OpenType features matter in practice:

  • Stylistic alternates: swap in the alternate lowercase letter by letter. We and the Color’s write-up says to turn on Stylistic Alternates in Photoshop.
  • Ligatures: answering a buyer on the product page, Parrett says a double “t” (as in “letters”) needs ligatures turned on so it gets a single crossbar.

Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop and Affinity support both. Canva, Cricut Design Space and most phone apps can’t reach OpenType alternates, but with Madina you can switch words to the Alt font and type ornaments from the ornaments font instead.

Madina Script font pairings and best uses

The designer suggests logos, quotes, invitations, cards, packaging and headers; the official previews show a Christmas card, a “Save the Date” card and boutique logos. Use it for a few words at a large size, since low x-height brush scripts get hard to read in long lines.

  • With a sans: the official mock-ups pair Madina with small, widely spaced sans capitals. Montserrat or Josefin Sans in capitals with extra tracking does the same job.
  • With a serif: Lora gives readable body text under a script heading on stationery.
  • Rough or Clean: use the textured Script for print, kraft labels and social graphics; use Clean for vinyl, embroidery, foil and very small sizes.

Madina Script licensing: personal and commercial use

Any paid licence allows commercial use, but the terms depend on the store.

Creative Market sells Desktop ($18, priced per seat), Webfont ($18), E-pub ($249) and App ($144) licences, with Enterprise licences by quote and a discount when you combine licence types. Its font EULA allows logos, an unlimited number of physical goods and “all forms of video, animation, television”. Desktop web use is limited to images, and its licence overview rules out print-on-demand where someone else makes the final product, and adds conditions for trademarked logos.

Set Sail Studios sells a Standard licence for $18, web licences from $18 (10,000 views a month) to $899 (unlimited), a $149 ePub licence, a $249 App licence and a $249 Editable Template licence. Its licence PDF covers desktop apps and Canva for one user on two devices, commercial use up to 250,000 reproductions and logos (you must alter the letters to register a trademark). Broadcast and streamed video need an extension, which matters if you make video for TV or streaming.

MyFonts charges $4 per style or $16 for the 4-font family for one desktop user, with webfont, app, e-book and company licences sold separately.

App and e-book prices differ between Creative Market and Set Sail, so compare before buying one. This is general information, not legal advice.

How to download and install Madina Script

  1. Buy a licence on Creative Market (or Set Sail Studios or MyFonts) and download the ZIP.
  2. Unzip it. Parrett recommends installing the TTF files and using the OTF only if necessary; they work the same. Don’t install both formats of one style.
  3. Windows: select the files, right-click and choose Install.
  4. Mac: double-click each file and click Install Font in Font Book.
  5. Restart your design app. Cricut Design Space reads installed system fonts; in Canva, Pro and Teams users can upload the font files under Brand Kit.

Free fonts similar to Madina Script

Free fonts similar to Madina Script: Birthstone Bounce, Comforter Brush and Mrs Saint Delafield compared
Three free fonts similar to Madina Script, rendered from the Google Fonts files. None of them is Madina Script itself.

Set against Madina’s official specimens, these Google Fonts come closest. All three are under the SIL Open Font License, so commercial use is free.

  • Birthstone Bounce: the closest match in rhythm. It has the same small x-height, tall looped ascenders and bouncy baseline. The strokes are smooth, so it is nearer to Madina Clean than to the rough Script, and it comes in Regular and Medium.
  • Comforter Brush: the pick if you want dry-brush texture like the original Madina Script. It is narrower and more upright, with fewer loops and no ornaments.
  • Mrs Saint Delafield: a casual handwritten script with tiny lowercase and tall, loose loops. The stroke is a thin pen line rather than a brush, so it looks lighter and more slanted; set it larger than you would set Madina.

Among paid fonts we cover from the same designer, Northwell is a textured brush script that also comes with Clean versions, Avallon is built from scanned paint strokes as a colour font, and Hyperwave is a rowdier three-font marker set.

Madina Script font FAQ

Is Madina Script free to download?

No. There is no official free or demo version. It is a paid font from Set Sail Studios. As of October 2026, the full 6-font download costs $18 on Creative Market, and MyFonts sells its 4-font family for $16 or single styles for $4.

Is the Madina font on DaFont the same as Madina Script?

No. “Madina” on DaFont is by Ghuroba Studio, a different calligraphy font, free for personal use only. Sam Parrett’s Madina Script is not on DaFont.

What is the difference between Madina Script and Madina Clean?

Madina Script has a rough, dry-brush edge. Madina Clean has the same letters with smooth outlines, which the designer recommends for vinyl and laser cutting.

Can I use Madina Script in Canva or with Cricut?

Yes, with a licence. Set Sail’s Standard licence names Canva explicitly. Upload the files to Canva Pro or install them for Cricut Design Space, use Madina Clean for cutting, and use the Alt font for alternate letters.

What is the closest free font to Madina Script?

Birthstone Bounce is closest in letter shapes and bounce. Comforter Brush is the better match for the textured brush look.
