Clarendon font free download guide: commercial 1845 slab serif, the free Besley revival, Mac and Adobe Fonts options and 3 free alternatives

There is no official Clarendon font free download. The design dates from 1845, but every digital Clarendon (Linotype, Bitstream, URW, Typodermic and others) is a commercial font sold under licence. Legal no-cost options exist: Besley on Google Fonts is a free revival inspired by the original, Macs include Superclarendon, and Adobe Fonts has Clarendon URW for Creative Cloud members. Linotype’s Clarendon costs from $29.99 per style on MyFonts as of October 2026.

Clarendon font free download: what’s free and what isn’t

Three routes are legal. Only the first is free for everyone:

  • Besley (free, any use): Besley on Google Fonts is Owen Earl’s slab serif inspired by Robert Besley’s Clarendon, in weights from Regular to Black with italics. Its SIL Open Font License allows commercial use.
  • Superclarendon (Mac only): Apple’s list of fonts included with macOS Tahoe includes eight Superclarendon styles, Light to Black with italics. Apple calls them document-support fonts, “available only to documents that already use the font, or to apps that request the font by name”, so they may not appear in every font menu.
  • Adobe Fonts (paid plans): Clarendon URW, Clarendon Text and Superclarendon are all in the Adobe Fonts library. They are full-library fonts, not part of the free tier, so you need a paid Creative Cloud plan.

Clarendon is not in Microsoft Office’s cloud fonts or Microsoft’s Windows 11 and Windows 10 font lists. Sites offering a free “Clarendon.ttf” are sharing a foundry’s files without permission.

Clarendon font at a glance

  • Original: Robert Besley, Fann Street Foundry (Thorowgood and Besley), London, 1845
  • Punchcutter: Benjamin Fox, who may also have shaped the design
  • Style: bracketed slab serif, called Clarendon or Ionic in England and “English Egyptienne” elsewhere
  • Best-known modern cut: Hermann Eidenbenz’s 1953 version for Haas, later sold by Stempel and Linotype
  • Price: Linotype Clarendon from $29.99 per style on MyFonts; other versions $40.99 to $69.95 per style, as of October 2026
  • Free alternatives: Besley, Montagu Slab, Alfa Slab One

The Clarendon typeface: 1845 to today

Wikipedia credits the design to Robert Besley, a partner in Thorowgood and Besley, and says it was “originally engraved by punchcutter Benjamin Fox, who may also have contributed to its design.” Luc Devroye quotes the historian James Mosley: “It was registered in Britain in 1845 under the new Ornamental Designs Act of 1842”. Devroye calls it “the first registered typeface, ever.” Protection lasted only three years; then other foundries copied it, and “Clarendon” became the name of a style rather than one font.

Wikipedia’s Clarendon article calls this a patent, but its Robert Besley article says “the design was not patented”. Registration is the accurate term.

The Clarendon most people use today is a 20th-century redraw. Fonts In Use describes Haas Clarendon as “Hermann Eidenbenz’s 1953 adaptation of the 19th-century slab serif distinguished by bracketed serifs”, with Stempel adding more weights in the 1960s, including a Bold Expanded in 1964.

One note for searchers: the Instagram filter called Clarendon has nothing to do with the typeface.

Design and character

Clarendon is a softer slab serif than Rockwell. Its serifs are bracketed, curving into the stem instead of meeting it at a hard right angle. Wikipedia notes ball terminals on the “a” and “c”, a curled leg on the “R”, and less contrast between thick and thin strokes than the “modern” serifs of the same era.

Linotype’s MyFonts description says the style stays legible in small print and catches the eye in larger sizes, which is why it turns up on both price labels and posters.

Which Clarendon to buy: the main digital versions

Several foundries sell a Clarendon. Prices are MyFonts’ one-user Desktop licence, as of October 2026.

Linotype Clarendon (Clarendon Std)

MyFonts sells 3 styles, Light, Roman and Bold, credited to Hermann Eidenbenz, at $29.99 each. The Complete Family Pack is $100.99, which is more than buying the three fonts separately ($89.97).

Clarendon LT and Clarendon Bold Expanded

Clarendon LT Pro, also from Linotype and credited to Eidenbenz, has 5 fonts: Light, Medium, Bold, Extra Bold and Bold Expanded. Each is $40.99 and the pack is $197.99. Choose it if you need the wide Bold Expanded for headlines.

Clarendon BT Pro (Bitstream)

Clarendon BT Pro has 7 fonts: Light, Roman, Bold, Heavy, Black, Condensed and Bold Condensed. They cost $50.99 each or $209.99 as a pack. MyFonts lists 450 glyphs per font with Central and Eastern European support.

Superclarendon, Clarendon URW and Clarendon Text

Superclarendon by Ray Larabie of Typodermic is a broader, more modern revival with 8 styles at $69.95 each or $169.95 for the family. Adobe Fonts carries Clarendon URW in 30 styles (three widths, Light to Extra Bold, with obliques) and Patrick Griffin’s 4-style Clarendon Text from Canada Type. Fonts In Use says URW’s 2006 Clarendon has five widths, so check which ones you get.

Quick pick: buy Linotype Clarendon for the classic look on a budget, Clarendon LT for Bold Expanded, Bitstream for the heaviest weights and condensed styles, and Superclarendon if you need true italics.

Language support and OpenType features

Coverage varies by version. MyFonts doesn’t list languages for Linotype’s Clarendon Std; Bitstream’s page names ligatures, fractions, superscripts and case-sensitive forms. The Superclarendon copy in macOS, which we inspected, has 1,560 characters including Greek and Cyrillic, plus three features:

  • Ligatures (liga): joins letter pairs such as “fi” so they don’t collide.
  • Fractions (frac): turns 1/2 typed with a slash into a proper fraction.
  • Old-style figures (onum): numbers that rise and fall like lowercase letters, for a softer look in running text.

InDesign, Illustrator and Affinity can switch these on. Canva and Cricut Design Space can’t reach OpenType features, so there you get the default letters and figures.

Famous uses: signs, posters and the Sony logo question

Wikipedia says Clarendons are “commonly associated with wanted posters and the American Old West”, though it adds that the reversed-contrast letters seen on circus posters and wanted notices in western films are French Clarendon, a different design. Wikipedia’s NPS Rawlinson Roadway article says the National Park Service’s road-sign typeface was “created in 2000 by Terminal Design to replace Clarendon”.

Fonts In Use lists over 150 uses, including the 1961 Judgment at Nuremberg posters, Sam & Dave’s Soul Men album, the 1976 Apple-1 Operation Manual and the 1997 Grand Theft Auto PC cover. Sony’s wordmark is widely called a modified Clarendon, but we found no Sony or Fonts In Use source confirming it, so treat that as a resemblance.

Clarendon font pairings and best uses

Clarendon suits headlines, posters, packaging, menus and signs; lighter weights handle short paragraphs.

  • With a sans: a neutral grotesque is the classic partner. A 1978 Sony ad on Fonts In Use pairs Clarendon with Helvetica; Inter is a free option in the same spirit.
  • With a text serif: Source Serif 4 keeps long reading calm while Clarendon Bold carries the titles.
  • Spacing: the bold weights are dense, so loosen tracking slightly in all-caps lines.

Clarendon licensing: personal vs commercial use

A MyFonts Desktop licence covers installing the font for print, images and logos. Websites, apps, email ads and e-books need their own licence types (Webfonts, App, Digital Ad/Email, Electronic Doc). Adobe Fonts says its library “is cleared for both personal and commercial use”, but sends you to the foundry for app embedding and self-hosting. The Mac’s Superclarendon is licensed for that Mac only. Besley’s open licence allows almost anything except selling the font files on their own. This is general information, not legal advice; read the licence that comes with your copy.

How to download and install Clarendon legally

  1. Buy on MyFonts or download Besley from Google Fonts, then unzip the .otf or .ttf files.
  2. Windows: right-click the files and choose Install (or Install for all users).
  3. Mac: double-click each file and click Install in Font Book.
  4. Adobe Fonts: click Activate on the family page and keep the Creative Cloud app running.
  5. Restart open apps to see the font.

Free fonts similar to Clarendon

Free fonts similar to Clarendon: Besley, Montagu Slab and Alfa Slab One compared
Three free fonts similar to Clarendon, rendered from the Google Fonts files. None of them is a retail Clarendon such as Linotype, Bitstream or URW Clarendon.

These three Google Fonts come closest to Clarendon’s bracketed slabs. All are under the SIL Open Font License.

  • Besley: the closest. It is modelled on Besley’s 1845 Clarendon, with ball terminals, a curled R leg and bracketed serifs. It differs in slightly rounded corners and a range that starts at Regular, with no Light.
  • Montagu Slab: Florian Karsten’s 19th-century-inspired slab, with weights from Thin to Bold and an optical size axis. At display sizes it has more contrast and “prominent upturned tails”, so it reads quirkier than Clarendon. There is no italic.
  • Alfa Slab One: one ultra-heavy weight based on a Pica Egyptian by Robert Thorne for the Thorowgood foundry, the same business that later issued Clarendon. It is blacker and its slabs are blunter, so use it for a Clarendon Bold poster look, not for text.

Among fonts we cover, Rockwell is the geometric slab with unbracketed serifs, Vintage Varsity is a chunky collegiate slab for letterman-style graphics, and Windsor comes from Stephenson Blake, the Sheffield foundry that owned the original Clarendon from 1906.

Clarendon font FAQ

Is Clarendon font free?

No. Every retail Clarendon is commercial. Besley on Google Fonts is the free, legal look-alike.

Is Clarendon on Adobe Fonts?

Yes: Clarendon URW, Clarendon Text and Superclarendon, with a paid Creative Cloud plan. We didn’t find Linotype’s Clarendon there.

Does Clarendon come with Windows, Office or macOS?

Not Windows or Office. macOS includes Superclarendon, a Clarendon revival by Typodermic, as a document-support font.

Who designed Clarendon?

Robert Besley registered it in 1845, with Benjamin Fox as punchcutter. Hermann Eidenbenz drew the 1953 Haas version behind Linotype’s Clarendon.

Is Clarendon in Canva or Cricut?

We couldn’t confirm a Clarendon in Canva’s built-in library. Canva Pro and Cricut Design Space can use fonts you upload or install, so a licensed Clarendon or the free Besley will work, without OpenType extras.

What is the closest free font to Clarendon?

Besley, which is modelled on the 1845 design. For a heavy poster weight, try Alfa Slab One.
