Papyrus Font Free Download
There is no official Papyrus font free download. Papyrus is a commercial typeface sold under the ITC label, and no foundry offers a free or personal-use edition. You probably have it already, though. Apple lists Papyrus and Papyrus Condensed among the fonts included with macOS, and Microsoft says Papyrus is available within Office applications. If you need a licence of your own, MyFonts sells Papyrus Std Regular for $40.99 (Desktop, 1 user) as of October 2026.
Papyrus font free download: check what you already have
Check your font menus first. Two legal routes cost nothing extra:
- macOS: Apple’s list of fonts included with macOS Tahoe has Papyrus and Papyrus Condensed (version 13.0d1e2) in its “installed or downloadable” group. If they look greyed out in Font Book, click Download.
- Microsoft Office: Microsoft’s Papyrus page lists a single style (Papyrus.ttf), names ITC as the vendor and says the typeface “is available within Office applications”. It is also on Microsoft’s cloud fonts list, which Microsoft 365 subscribers get on demand inside Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook.
Neither lets you copy the font file to another computer, a client or a website.

Skip the sites offering a “Papyrus free download” ZIP. They have no right to license an ITC font, so a file from them gives you no licence at all.

The Papyrus typeface: who made it and why
Chris Costello, born in 1959 according to Luc Devroye’s designer index, drew Papyrus straight out of college. “I designed the font when I was 23 years old,” he told CBS News. The Ringer dates the drawing to 1982, while he was working at an ad agency. He told Mental Floss he had been thinking about the Middle East and biblical times while experimenting with letters.
Letraset, the British maker of rub-down lettering sheets, bought the design. Letraset first asked him to thicken the letters and add a lowercase, The Ringer says. Reports of the fee disagree: $750 (CBS), £750 (The Ringer) or $2,500 (Mental Floss). Costello told CBS his royalties are “very low”.
The big jump came when Microsoft picked up Papyrus in 1997 for Office, Mental Floss reports. Microsoft’s own page carries a 1997 copyright line, and Apple later bundled it with Mac OS X. That is how one font ended up on almost every computer.
The Avatar Papyrus font and the SNL sketch
According to The Ringer, Peter Stougaard, then 20th Century Fox’s senior VP of creative advertising, picked Papyrus for James Cameron’s 2009 film. Papyrus has no bold and its strokes were too thin for a poster, so he thickened the letters. The logo is therefore modified Papyrus, not the stock font. The subtitles that translate the Na’vi language were, in Costello’s words, “pure Papyrus”.
On September 30, 2017, Saturday Night Live aired “Papyrus”, written by Julio Torres, with Ryan Gosling as Steven, a man haunted by the Avatar logo. Costello told CBS it “was one of the best things I’ve seen” and admitted the font is “way overused”.
For Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), the producers moved to a custom typeface called Toruk. Producer Jon Landau told Syfy the team “created our own font”, and The Ringer says the studio hired type designer John Roshell in 2019 to complete it from earlier work by Zach Fannin. SNL’s “Papyrus 2”, a cut-for-time sketch from April 13, 2024, joked that the new logo was just Papyrus in bold.
Design and character
MyFonts describes Papyrus as “a roman calligraphic typeface with distinctive human touches like rough edges, irregular curves, and high horizontal strokes in the caps”. The macOS copy shows all of that. Outlines are ragged, like ink on fibrous paper. The bars of A, E, F and H sit well above the middle. The lowercase looks pen-written, with a curly y and a calligraphic g. Numbers are old-style, so 3, 4, 5, 7 and 9 drop below the line.
It is a light, single-weight display face. The rough texture reads as handmade at headline size, but in long passages the thin strokes get tiring to read.
What’s in the Papyrus family
- Papyrus Std Regular: the only font MyFonts sells under this name.
- Papyrus Condensed: a narrower version that ships with macOS. We didn’t find it for sale on the MyFonts family page.
- No bold or italic: a Bold button in your app only fakes it by thickening the outline.
Language support and OpenType features
MyFonts publishes no language list for Papyrus Std, so we checked the copy installed with macOS Tahoe. It has 876 characters covering Western and Central European Latin, Turkish, Romanian and Vietnamese, but not the Greek or Cyrillic alphabets. Microsoft’s Office version lists only the Latin 1 and Mac Roman code pages, so its coverage may be narrower.
The only OpenType feature is kerning, which adjusts the space between awkward pairs such as “Te” or “AV”. There are no ligatures, stylistic sets or swashes to switch on. That has an upside: Canva, Cricut Design Space and video editors, which can’t reach OpenType alternates, show you the same Papyrus you would get in InDesign.
Papyrus font pairings and best uses
Papyrus works best in short bursts where a handmade or ancient mood is the point: tea packaging, spa signage, fantasy game titles, ancient-world exhibit labels and retreat flyers. Because it is everywhere, it can also look like a default choice. Luc Devroye calls it “simultaneously gorgeous and overused”.
- With a sans: Lato or Source Sans 3 for body text keeps the layout calm so Papyrus can carry the mood.
- With a serif: EB Garamond suits longer text on menus, invitations and book covers.
- Size: keep Papyrus large, with a little extra spacing on all-caps titles.
Papyrus licensing: personal and commercial use
What you may do depends on where your copy came from:
- Bought on MyFonts: the Desktop licence covers creating designs and is priced by the number of users ($40.99 for 1, $65.58 for 2). Company Desktop starts at $76.86 for up to 20 employees. Webfonts start at $40.99 for 10,000 pageviews a month, and App, Electronic Doc and Digital Ad/Email are separate licences.
- macOS: Apple’s macOS Tahoe licence lets you use bundled fonts “to display and print content while running the Apple Software”, and embedding is limited by each font’s own settings. In the files we checked, Papyrus allows editable embedding and Papyrus Condensed allows preview and print only.
- Microsoft Office: Microsoft’s font FAQ covers only fonts supplied with Windows. For fonts that come with other apps, it tells you to read those apps’ licence agreements, so check your Office terms.
No bundled copy lets you self-host Papyrus as a web font or build it into an app. Microsoft points anyone who needs those rights to Monotype’s licensing page. This is general information, not legal advice.
How to get a Papyrus font download legally
- Mac: open Font Book and search “Papyrus”. If it is greyed out, click Download. It then appears in every app’s font menu.
- Microsoft 365: pick Papyrus from the font menu in Word or PowerPoint. Cloud fonts need an internet connection and “optional connected experiences” turned on (File > Account > Manage Settings).
- Anywhere else: buy Papyrus Std on MyFonts, choose the licence that matches your use and download the file from your account.
- Install a purchased file: on Windows, right-click it and choose Install; on a Mac, double-click it and click Install Font.
Free fonts similar to Papyrus

None has Papyrus’s rough edges, but each shares its calligraphic roman shapes. All three are under the SIL Open Font License, which allows commercial use.
- Aref Ruqaa: an Arabic family whose Latin letters are based on Hermann Zapf’s AMS Euler. Its pen-shaped capitals and lowercase are the closest overall match. Edges are smooth, and it comes in Regular and Bold.
- Macondo: a calligraphic display face by John Vargas Beltrán, inspired by tarot illustrations based on One Hundred Years of Solitude. It is quirkier and heavier than Papyrus, with angular capitals, and has a Swash Caps sister family.
- Della Respira: Nathan Willis’s revival of ATF’s Della Robbia. It gives you the classical, ancient-roman feel with clean edges and wide capitals. There is one style.
Among paid fonts we cover, Salome Nomadic is a sun-worn handwritten serif for boho branding, Apothecary Serif is a textured vintage print serif for labels and headings, and Oldforge is a distressed medieval display face for fantasy and game titles.
