Bickham Script Pro Font Free Download

Bickham Script Pro font free download guide: Adobe Fonts access, MyFonts price and 3 free alternatives

There is no legal Bickham Script Pro font free download. Bickham Script is a commercial Adobe Originals typeface by Richard Lipton, and the current version is Bickham Script Pro 3. Adobe has never released a free or personal-use edition. The closest thing to “free” is Adobe Fonts: if you already pay for a Creative Cloud plan that includes the full font library, you can activate all three weights at no extra cost. Otherwise you license it, from $35 per style or $95 for the family on MyFonts as of October 2026.

Bickham Script Pro font free download: the honest answer

Bickham Script sits in the paid part of the Adobe Fonts library. On its Adobe Fonts page, all three styles are marked as part of the full library, not the free tier that any Adobe account can use. Not every Adobe plan includes the full library, so check that yours does before you rely on it.

If you don’t have Creative Cloud, buy a licence. MyFonts sells the family as “Bickham Script 3”: Regular, Semibold and Bold from $35.00 each, or all three for $95.00. Fontspring, the reseller Adobe named at launch, also sells it.

Free “Bickham Script” files on other sites are unlicensed copies or look-alikes with a borrowed name, and they give you no right to use the font.

Where Bickham Script comes from

The design is based on English roundhand, the formal handwriting of 18th-century London. Its source is George Bickham’s The Universal Penman (1741), where Bickham engraved the work of the writing masters of his day. John Hudson’s Typographica review calls Lipton’s work a distillation of the roundhand exemplars in that book.

According to Adobe’s account of creating Bickham Script, Fred Brady of Adobe invited Lipton to submit the design at the 1994 ATypI conference. The first release, in 1996, was a multiple master font with a light-to-bold weight axis, split across eight separate fonts: the base font, Alternates 1, Alternates 2, Beginnings, Endings, Ligatures, Swash Caps and Ornaments. An OpenType version, Bickham Script Std, followed in 2003. Bickham Script Pro then added Central and Eastern European languages, more alternates and contextual rules.

Bickham Script Pro 3 arrived in 2016. It added Greek and Cyrillic, with Gerry Leonidas and Maxim Zhukov advising, plus many more alternates, ligatures and swashes.

Design and the Bickham Script alphabet

On Adobe Fonts’ specimen, the lowercase alphabet is a steeply slanted, connected roundhand with strong contrast between hairlines and thick shaded strokes. The ascenders of b, d, h, k and l are drawn as tall loops, and the x-height is small, which leaves a lot of air between lines. The default capitals are already ornate. The specimen shows an A with a long, curling entry stroke and capitals such as H and W wrapped in looping flourishes, alongside quieter B, C and D shapes.

Adobe’s description says its personality “can range from poised to extravagant”, depending on the alternates you use, and that it is “intended primarily for display settings”. The thin hairlines and small lowercase make it a face for names, headings and short lines set large.

Bickham Script Fancy: what the “fancy” letters are

There is no official style called “Bickham Script Fancy”. The family on Adobe Fonts and MyFonts has three styles only: Regular, Semibold and Bold. The fancy look comes from the alternates inside each font: swash capitals, word-beginning letters with a swash to the left, word-ending letters with a swash to the right, and complex ligatures. In the 1996 version those extras were sold as separate fonts with names like Swash Caps and Alternates. In Pro 3 they are all inside one file per weight. Fonts with “Bickham” and “Fancy” in the name on free-font sites are not Adobe’s.

Language support and OpenType features

Adobe Fonts lists 36 supported languages for Bickham Script Pro 3. That includes Western and Central European languages, Turkish, Vietnamese and Pinyin, Greek, and Cyrillic languages such as Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Serbian and Kazakh.

The features, as described in Adobe’s guide to using Bickham Script, in plain words:

  • Contextual alternates: the font is designed to be used with these on. It swaps in a different version of a letter depending on its neighbours, so joins look natural and repeated letters don’t look stamped.
  • Swash and stylistic alternates: apply these to single letters to get the flourished capitals and extra-curly forms.
  • Stylistic Set 1: another set of alternate shapes you can apply letter by letter. Not every letter has one.
  • Ligatures: joined pairs and three-letter combinations. The more unusual ones have to be picked by hand from the Glyphs panel.

InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Affinity can reach all of this through their OpenType or Glyphs panels. Canva, Cricut Design Space and most video and phone apps can’t. In those apps you get the default letters and nothing from the alternates.

Bickham Script font pairings and best uses

Adobe’s tags and description point to the obvious uses: wedding invitations, save-the-dates, menus, annual reports, restaurant logos and packaging. Fonts In Use records it in the Pretty Little Liars logo, Burberry show graphics in London and Slingshot Coffee Co. packaging.

  • Use swash capitals with lowercase: Adobe says they are “always intended to be used alongside lowercase letters”, so avoid setting words in all capitals.
  • Pair with a classic serif: Adobe’s guide suggests period roman capitals or Kepler small caps. A Caslon, such as the free Libre Caslon Text, fits the 18th-century English source.

Licensing: personal and commercial use

There is no free personal-use licence, so even a home wedding invitation needs Adobe Fonts access or a purchased licence. Adobe says all fonts on Adobe Fonts are cleared for personal and commercial use, including logos, PDFs, video and web projects. Embedding the font in a mobile app, self-hosting it or volume licensing needs a separate purchase.

A MyFonts Desktop licence covers flat, non-editable designs such as brand identity, print and video titles, for the licensed number of users. It doesn’t allow you to share, edit or install the font on a server. Webfont, Electronic Doc, Digital Ad and App licences are sold separately. This is general information, not legal advice.

Free fonts similar to Bickham Script Pro: Pinyon Script, Great Vibes and Italianno compared
Three free fonts similar to Bickham Script Pro, rendered from the Google Fonts files. None of them is Bickham Script itself.

None of these is Bickham Script, but all three are free on Google Fonts under the SIL Open Font License, which allows commercial use.

  • Pinyon Script: a “romantic round hand script” by Nicole Fally, the closest free match to Bickham’s roundhand base. Set from the Google Fonts file, it is as slanted and high in contrast, but most ascenders are plain stems, the capitals are calmer, and there is no Greek or Cyrillic.
  • Great Vibes: formal lowercase with more casual capitals, plus over 2,000 glyphs with connecting ligatures and alternates. It is more upright and lower in contrast than Bickham, with looped ascenders. It also covers Cyrillic, for Russian or Ukrainian invitations.
  • Italianno: an elegant calligraphic script with clean connecting strokes. It sets much smaller, narrower and lighter than Bickham at the same point size, so size it up to match.

Among paid fonts we cover, Mozart Script II is a Spencerian copperplate script for DIY wedding work, Antura Script is a copperplate-inflected script for formal invitations and labels, and Ecatherina is a 15-style wedding script built for layered invitation suites.

If you need a free script with a similar slant for personal or commercial work, Whisper is free on Google Fonts under the SIL Open Font License.

Bickham Script Pro FAQ

Is Bickham Script Pro free?

No. It is a commercial Adobe font with no free version. It is included at no extra cost with Creative Cloud plans that have the full Adobe Fonts library; otherwise it costs $35 per style or $95 for the family on MyFonts.

What is the difference between Bickham Script, Bickham Script Pro and Bickham Script Pro 3?

They are versions of the same design. Bickham Script Pro added Central and Eastern European support and more alternates to the earlier versions, and Pro 3 (2016) added Greek and Cyrillic. MyFonts lists the current family as “Bickham Script 3”.

Is Bickham Script in Canva?

We couldn’t find it in Canva’s built-in library. Adobe Fonts activations aren’t files you can upload, so Canva Pro would need purchased files and a licence that allows it, and Canva can’t show the alternates.

Can I use Bickham Script with Cricut?

If the font is installed on your computer through Adobe Fonts or a MyFonts licence, Cricut Design Space can usually see it as a system font. You only get the default letters, not the swashes.

Who designed Bickham Script?

Richard Lipton, a calligrapher and type designer, for Adobe. Robert Slimbach did the initial designs for the Pro 3 extension and directed Lipton’s later work on it.

What is the closest free font to Bickham Script?

Pinyon Script is the closest in style, since both come from English roundhand. Great Vibes is the better choice if you need Cyrillic or more alternates.
