Authenia Textured: a gritty brush script with built-in texture for rustic branding

Design style

Authenia Textured is a brush script drawn quickly and loosely, then scanned and vectorised while keeping the dry-brush breakup in the strokes. That texture is the whole point of this version: edges fray, mid-strokes thin to almost nothing, and the ink looks like it’s running out of pressure at the ends of long connectors. It reads as handwritten rather than digitised, which is exactly what a lot of brush scripts promise and few actually deliver without looking uniform.

The letter construction itself is casual — open apertures, inconsistent baseline contact, a general looseness that suggests someone writing at speed rather than composing a display face letter by letter. That’s a deliberate trade-off. It gives the font warmth and hand-feel, but it also means every letterform carries some visual noise even before you factor in the texture layer. Two people looking at the same word might read it slightly differently depending on size and background colour.

Character set and features

The font ships with two sets of lowercase letters, which you can leave to randomise via Contextual Alternates or select by hand. This is the feature that actually earns its keep: without it, a brush script this loose starts to repeat visibly in longer copy, and repetition is the thing that kills the handmade illusion fastest. Toggling between the two sets in a headline or a short paragraph breaks up that pattern convincingly.

There are stylistic alternates on top of that, plus underlines you can append to words or phrases rather than relying on a separate rule tool. None of this is unusual for a script family at this point, but it’s implemented with enough alternates that you’re not stuck reusing the same swash three times on one label.

Use cases

This is a font for texture-forward, tactile branding — packaging labels, market and farm-shop signage, craft beer and small-batch food branding, anything trying to look handmade rather than manufactured. The dry-brush grain pairs naturally with kraft paper, stamped logos, and rustic or artisanal visual language. It’s less suited to anything that needs to read cleanly at small sizes or on screen at low resolution; the texture and thin strokes both lose definition fast once you shrink the type, so it wants generous point sizes and short amounts of text — a product name, a headline, a signature line, not a paragraph.

For logo work it’s strong precisely because logos are usually short and printed large. For long-form editorial or body copy, it’s the wrong tool; the texture becomes visual static rather than character. Authenia Textured delivers real dry-brush character and a genuinely useful dual-lowercase system for avoiding repetition. It's a strong pick for rustic, tactile branding at large sizes, but the grain and thin strokes make it a poor fit for small text or long copy.
