Chalkboard Fonts: 10 Best Chalk Fonts for Menus, Classrooms and Signs
A chalkboard font imitates white chalk on a dark board: dusty, broken strokes, slightly wobbly letters and the casual look of a café menu or a classroom sign. It is a texture more than a letter style: chalk scripts, chalk sans serifs and chalky caps all qualify.
Our top three picks are Chalky Fingers, drawn with real chalk by a chalkboard artist for menu boards; Tuck Shop, a childlike classroom font made on a slate board; and The Chalker, a one-stroke chalk script. Seven more follow, from menu-board bundles to textured poster caps.

What is a chalkboard font?
The phrase means two things.
Chalkboard, the Apple system font
Chalkboard is the name of a font that comes with every Mac. Apple’s list of fonts included with macOS Tahoe shows Chalkboard and Chalkboard Bold, plus a separate family, Chalkboard SE, in Light, Regular and Bold. Wikipedia’s list of macOS typefaces notes that the Bold weight was added in Mac OS X 10.4. Despite the name, Apple’s Chalkboard has smooth, rounded strokes with no chalk texture; it is a casual, comic-style handwriting face. Chalkduster, on the same list, is the Mac font that looks dusty. If a document asks for “Chalkboard,” you already have it on a Mac.
The chalk-lettering style
The wider meaning is any font that looks written in chalk. Blackboards started as thin sheets of black or dark grey slate, and restaurants and bars still use A-frame boards for daily specials. Creative Market’s roundup of chalkboard fonts describes the group as ranging from rough, angular caps to rounded, childlike script, but all sharing “the textures of white chalk on a black board.”
Hand-lettered chalk art grew into a design trend of its own. In 2012 PRINT magazine profiled Dana Tanamachi, a former Louise Fili designer who built a Brooklyn practice on chalk lettering for clients such as New York’s Ace Hotel and Rugby Ralph Lauren. Chalkboard fonts give you that look on a menu, classroom poster or wedding sign without drawing every letter.
Most chalk fonts share these traits:
- Grainy strokes: broken edges and specks where the chalk skipped.
- Handmade shapes: uneven baselines and letters that differ slightly each time.
- Light on dark: they are meant to be shown white or pastel on black, green or slate.
- Extras: arrows, banners and underlines like those sketched around menu prices.

1. Chalky Fingers
Chalky Fingers is the most authentic chalk font here. Its designer, Jeremy DV Boyd, is described on MyFonts as “a genuine chalkboard artist,” and the letters were “hand-drawn with real artists’ chalks.” The Creative Market listing pitches it for “restaurant & cafe menu boards,” and the strokes show real chalk grain. It includes “loads of swashes and arrows” to point at specials or underline a price, plus numbers, punctuation and multi-language characters. Desktop licence: $14 as of October 2026.

2. Tuck Shop
Simon Stratford (itsmesimon) made Tuck Shop “using real chalk and a natural slate chalkboard,” and the letters are rough and untidy, like a teacher’s quick notes. The listing calls it “a display chalk font with a childlike, naive personality.” There are three styles: Regular, Outline and Decoration. The Decoration font holds 77 ornaments, including stars, speech bubbles, arrows and dashed underlines. It covers Western, Central and South Eastern European characters. Use it for classroom signs, kids’ menus and back-to-school sales. Desktop licence: $16 as of October 2026.

3. The Chalker
The Chalker, from Konstantine Studio, is “a rough one stroke typeface with texture and chalk feels on it.” Each letter is drawn as a single chalk line, so words look written rather than built up from thick strokes. The package has OTF and TTF files plus bonus Adobe Illustrator brush strokes for drawing matching chalk underlines and frames. No alternates or ligatures are listed, so check repeated letters in your own words. It suits café specials, chalk-style quotes and casual wedding signs. Desktop licence: $15 as of October 2026.

4. 3 IN 1 Chalk Fonts Bundle + Extras
This StoricType bundle collects three chalk families in one download. BiteChalk is a sans that Creative Market’s roundup says was inspired by café menu boards; the bundle has four BiteChalk files (Regular, Bold, Normal and Slim). LaChalk comes with a companion font called Chalkz, and VanderChalk is a rough, all-caps display face. Vector extras come in AI, EPS and PNG. The seller says the set is “specially designed” for café and restaurant menu boards, where a sans, a lettering face and bold caps work well together. Desktop licence: $19 regular price as of October 2026; see the listing for current pricing.

5. Silverfields
Silverfields, from Rawberry Strubarb Ink, is a textured font trio: Silverfields, Silverfields Script and Silverfields All-Caps, each in Regular and Italic, for six styles. That makes matching a chalk script with a chalk sans easy. The listing promises alternate letters “to add a more flowy look,” eye-catching ligatures and Western characters. Extras include watercolour images (pumpkins, vegetables, leaves) and crayon-textured ribbons, tags and badges in EPS, suited to autumn markets and farm-to-table menus. Desktop licence: $15 as of October 2026.

6. Chalk Board
Chalk Board, by Limited Studio, is the heaviest font in this list. The listing says it “perfectly mimics the dusty, textured strokes of actual chalk” and warns that, with its “heavyweight and high-contrast texture,” it is “best used for large headlines or hero images.” In small print the texture turns to grey noise. The listing suggests coffee shop chalkboards, back-to-school promotions and rustic weddings. No alternates or extra styles are listed, so pair it with something calmer. Desktop licence: $15 as of October 2026.

7. Chalk Zone
Chalk Zone, from Good Java Studio (designed by Sarah Robbaniyyah), “is inspired by the writing of chalk on the blackboard of a school.” It looks like neat handwriting chalked on a board: rough at the edges but steady enough to read in a short sentence. Files come as OTF, TTF and WOFF, and the font is PUA-encoded, so extra characters can be reached in apps without OpenType support. The listing names T-shirts, menu boards, quotes, posters and logos as uses. Desktop licence: $18 as of October 2026.

8. KG Tangled Up In You
Kimberly Geswein’s KG Tangled Up In You is “a highly-textured all-caps font” with a clever trick. Both the uppercase and lowercase keys type capitals, but each set has a different distressing pattern, so mixing them stops repeated letters from showing identical texture. A solid version is included for layering: set the solid font in a darker colour behind the textured one to make the chalk look thicker or give it a shadow. Use it for short poster headlines, bulletin boards and party signs. Desktop licence: $15 as of October 2026.

9. Nameless
Anna Ivanir describes Nameless as “a new hand drawn chalk font with lots of character and fun extras.” It comes as two OTF fonts, the main font and a swash font, plus an AI file with 20 grunge swashes and 9 vector splatters. The listing mentions international language support and many alternate letters, reached through the glyphs panel in Illustrator, InDesign or Photoshop CC 2015 and later. It suits bar menus, event posters and social graphics. Desktop licence: $15 as of October 2026.

10. Rough Beauty Script
Rough Beauty Script, by Pedro Alexandre Teixeira (vectalex), is the most polished chalk script here: a flowing handwritten script with a rough, chalky edge. The listing offers alternate lowercase letters, ligatures and discretionary ligatures, and it has the widest language list in this roundup: Western, Central and Eastern European, Baltic, Romanian and Turkish. The designer notes the texture works over photos as well as flat backgrounds. Use it for names on a wedding welcome sign, a café heading or quotes on a dark poster. Desktop licence: $14 as of October 2026.

How to choose a chalkboard font
- Set it large. Chalk texture is made of tiny gaps and specks. At headline size it reads as chalk; at caption size it looks like a bad print.
- Use light text on a dark background. Chalk fonts are drawn for white or pastel on black, charcoal, dark green or slate. Dark chalk text on white loses the effect.
- Pair a chalk script with a chalk sans. Put the café name or couple’s names in a script (The Chalker, Rough Beauty Script) and dishes, times and directions in a chalk sans or caps (BiteChalk, Tuck Shop, Chalk Zone). Silverfields and the 3 IN 1 bundle include matching pairs.
- Match the tone. Tuck Shop and Chalk Zone feel like a classroom; Chalky Fingers and the 3 IN 1 bundle feel like a café menu; Rough Beauty Script and Silverfields Script suit weddings.
- Check printing and cutting. Textured fonts are made of many small shapes and cut badly on Cricut or vinyl machines. For a decal, use a solid layer such as the one in KG Tangled Up In You.
- Want a painted sign instead? See our roundup of sign painter fonts, and for playful café and kids’ lettering without chalk texture, our whimsical fonts guide.
Free chalkboard fonts

These three Google Fonts use open licences, so they are free for commercial work, logos and websites. Set them in white on a dark background for the chalk effect.
- Cabin Sketch (SIL Open Font License), by Impallari Type, is the sketch version of the Cabin sans, with what its designer calls “the texture of a teenage doodle.” Its scribbled strokes are the closest free match to a chalk sans such as BiteChalk; it has Regular and Bold but no extras.
- Fredericka the Great (SIL Open Font License), by Crystal Kluge of Tart Workshop, recalls hand-drawn presentation boards and student union posters. Its sketched, double-stroked letters look like careful chalk-art headings, though it is cleaner and lighter than Chalk Board or KG Tangled Up In You.
- Schoolbell (Apache License 2.0), by Font Diner, is playful classroom handwriting “from the finest lettering artist in the 2nd Grade.” It covers the same school-board mood as Tuck Shop and Chalk Zone, but its strokes are smooth, with no chalk grain.
Licensing: personal vs commercial use
Creative Market sells fonts under four licences, set out on its font licence page:
- Desktop: install the font and use it in “unlimited commercial and personal projects,” including printed menus, signs, packaging, social media and ads. Buy one seat per user. On websites and in games the font may appear only in rasterized form, as images.
- Webfont: embed it with CSS on websites you own or control.
- E-pub: embed it in one e-book title.
- App: embed it in one app or game.
Two rules matter for chalk lettering. Logos: the FAQ allows a font in a logo if it is “(1) modified and (2) not the dominant element of the logo,” and you must disclaim the font when registering a trademark. Print-on-demand: fonts may not be used with print-on-demand tools “whenever the end user is not the Licensee,” so shop customers cannot personalise products in your font. Sellers may add terms.
Apple’s Chalkboard follows different rules. The macOS Tahoe software licence lets you “use the fonts included with the Apple Software to display and print content while running the Apple Software,” and allows embedding only where the font’s own embedding restrictions permit. It does not give you the right to copy the font file to other computers or upload it to a website. This is a summary, not legal advice.
Chalkboard font FAQ
What is the Chalkboard font on a Mac?
Chalkboard and Chalkboard SE are casual handwriting-style fonts that Apple includes with macOS. They have smooth strokes, not chalk texture. Chalkduster, also on the Mac, is the one with a dusty chalk look.
Is the Chalkboard font free?
Apple’s Chalkboard is included with macOS at no extra cost, but only for use on that Mac under Apple’s licence. For free chalk-style fonts you can use commercially, try Cabin Sketch, Fredericka the Great or Schoolbell on Google Fonts.
What is the best chalk font for a café menu board?
Chalky Fingers was drawn by a chalkboard artist for menu boards and includes arrows and swashes. The 3 IN 1 Chalk Fonts Bundle gives you a sans, a lettering face and bold caps for headings, items and prices.
Can I do chalk lettering with a font?
Yes, for printed or digital boards. Set a chalk font in white on a dark background, mix a script for the main words with a sans for details, and add arrows or frames from the font’s extras, such as The Chalker’s Illustrator brushes.
Are chalk fonts good for wedding signs?
Yes. Put names in a softer script such as Rough Beauty Script or Silverfields Script, and set dates and table numbers in a plainer chalk sans that guests can read from a distance.
