TAN Enigma Font Free Download
A search for a TAN Enigma free download mostly turns up unofficial file hosts, so here is the straight answer: TanType Co. sells TAN Enigma as a paid font and does not offer an official free or demo version. We checked the Creative Market listing and searched for other foundry pages and found nothing free. A Desktop licence costs $17.
TAN Enigma free download: what you can legally get
The official source is the TAN Enigma listing on Creative Market, created in February 2022. When we checked in October 2026, it offered:
- Desktop licence, $17 per seat: logos, print, merchandise and images for websites or social media.
- Webfont, E-pub and App licences: $17, $40 and $136 list prices, with small discounts shown at the time.
- Enterprise/Custom: through Creative Market’s sales team. This is the only place the page mentions trial fonts.
The listing says you get TTF, OTF, WOFF and WOFF2 files, multilingual support and free future updates. The licensed files we used for the specimens on this page match that: all four formats, one style, 346 glyphs.
Zip files of TAN Enigma on free font sites are not published by the foundry, and downloading one does not give you a licence to use it.

Design and character
TanType’s own description is short: “an elegant display serif with a bit of eccentric twist that makes it far from your typical classic serif.” The eccentric part is easy to find in the specimens. Several letters are drawn as if a thin ribbon had been folded into them.
- The capital E has a middle arm that bends into an S-shaped curve instead of a straight bar.
- The G curls inward like a spiral, and the Q tail loops back through the bowl.
- The M has curved, overlapping inner strokes.
- In the lowercase, the e crossbar is a looped stroke, the g ends in a large, tilted oval, and the y tail curls back on itself.
Everything else is fairly classical: high contrast between thick stems and hairline strokes, small sharp serifs, round open bowls and tall ascenders. That mix is what makes the font work. A word like “Enigma” reads easily, and only two or three letters carry the decoration. The figures are calmer still. The 5 has a long flag and the 0 is a tall, narrow oval.
The style is named Display in the font files, and that is the right size range. The hairlines are very thin, so keep it for headings and short phrases.
What you get in the TAN Enigma package
- One style: Display. There is no bold, italic or variable version.
- Four formats: OTF and TTF for desktop apps, WOFF and WOFF2 for the web (with a Webfont licence).
- 346 glyphs: upper and lowercase, figures, punctuation and accented letters.
- Version 1.000, per the font files.
The listing does not mention extras such as mockups or ornaments.
Language support and OpenType features
The character set covers Basic Latin plus Western and Central/Eastern European accents, enough for French, Spanish, German, Polish, Czech and Hungarian.
TAN Enigma has two OpenType features:
- Stylistic alternates: optional versions of some letters. In Illustrator, InDesign or Photoshop, select a character and choose from the Glyphs panel or the pop-up that appears under it. Affinity Designer and Figma also expose alternates.
- Kerning: automatic spacing between letter pairs, applied by almost all software.
The alternates are not mapped to Private Use Area (PUA) code points. The listing itself warns that the font “works well in Canva” but that Canva “doesn’t support advance opentype features such as special characters.” The same goes for Cricut Design Space. To use the alternates you need an OpenType-capable app.
Best uses and font pairings
Good fits are beauty and skincare packaging, boutique hotel and restaurant branding, book and album covers, event posters and magazine headlines. The odd E, G and g make strong logo letters, so check which ones fall in your brand name.
Pair it with something quiet. Inter or Karla keep body text neutral. Jost has a geometric feel that suits fashion work. For a softer serif pairing, Crimson Pro in its regular weight handles paragraphs that Enigma should not.
Licensing: personal vs commercial use
TanType does not offer a personal-use edition, so personal and commercial projects alike need a licence. On Creative Market’s font licence page, the Desktop licence allows “unlimited commercial and personal projects,” including products and paid ads, provided the font is turned into an image (rasterised) for web or game use. Embedding the font on a website, in an ebook or in an app needs the matching Webfont, E-pub or App licence. You buy one seat per user, and sharing the files is not allowed. Treat this as a summary and read the terms yourself, as it is not legal advice.
How to install TAN Enigma
Windows: unzip the folder, right-click the OTF file and choose Install (or Install for all users).
Mac: unzip, double-click the OTF file and click Install Font in Font Book.
Use the OTF or TTF on your computer, not both, to avoid duplicate menu entries. Restart your app afterwards. For Canva, upload the OTF, TTF or WOFF in your Brand Kit; Canva’s upload help page says this needs a paid plan.
Free alternatives to TAN Enigma

None of the Google Fonts below copies Enigma’s ribbon-like letters. They are the closest free serifs if a TAN Enigma free download is off the table:
- EB Garamond: a classic old-style serif with much lower contrast. It is calm and readable, even in long text, but has no decorative letters at all.
- Crimson Pro: sturdier and more even in colour, made for text. A sensible choice for body copy next to a display face, less so as the headline itself.
- Playfair Display: the nearest in spirit, with high contrast and a display-only personality. Its shapes are more conventional and it is heavier than Enigma.
TAN Enigma FAQ
Is there an official TAN Enigma free download?
No. TAN Enigma is a commercial font, and we found no official demo. The Desktop licence on Creative Market was $17 when we checked.
Can I use TAN Enigma for commercial work?
Yes, once you buy a licence. Desktop covers logos, print and merchandise. Websites, ebooks and apps need their own licence.
Does TAN Enigma work in Canva?
The default letters do, according to the listing. Stylistic alternates do not, because Canva cannot switch OpenType features and the font has no PUA-mapped alternates.
Who made TAN Enigma?
Novia Jonatan of TanType Co., according to the font files.
Is TAN Enigma good for body text?
Not really. It is a display style with very fine hairlines. Use it for headings and pair it with a text face.
